When something in your mouth doesn't look quite right

Most changes in the mouth are harmless — a minor irritation, a small bump from accidentally biting your cheek, or temporary redness from a sharp food. But some lesions, lumps, or persistent sores warrant a closer look. Identifying what something actually is, rather than watching and waiting indefinitely, is how early problems get caught before they become bigger ones.

At Advanced Dentistry of Mooresville, we have the expertise to evaluate, diagnose, and treat many types of oral lesions in-office — including performing biopsies and removing fibromas and mucoceles. Patients don't always need a separate specialist referral for these concerns, and having it handled by someone who already knows your mouth and your history makes a real difference.

What is an oral biopsy?

A biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue from a suspicious area in the mouth so it can be examined under a microscope by a pathologist. It's the only definitive way to determine whether a lesion is benign or something that requires further treatment.

Biopsies are recommended when a sore, patch, or growth hasn't resolved within two to three weeks, when tissue looks or feels abnormal, or when an area is identified during routine oral cancer screening that warrants investigation. The procedure itself is straightforward — the area is numbed with local anaesthetic, a small tissue sample is taken, and it's sent to an oral pathology laboratory for analysis. Most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable the process is.

Dr. Lindsey will always explain exactly what she's found, why a biopsy is recommended, and what the results process looks like before anything is done. You'll never be left wondering what comes next.

Lesions commonly evaluated or biopsied include:

Most biopsies come back benign. The goal of a biopsy isn't to alarm — it's to give you a definitive answer. In most cases, results are reassuring. When they're not, catching something early is always better than finding it later.

Mucocele removal

A mucocele is a smooth, fluid-filled cyst that forms on the inner surface of the lip — most commonly the lower lip. They develop when a minor salivary gland duct becomes blocked or damaged, often from accidentally biting the lip or from repeated localised trauma, causing saliva to pool beneath the tissue surface.

Mucoceles are typically clear in appearance, soft to the touch, and range in size from a few millimetres to over a centimetre. They're not dangerous, but they can be persistently uncomfortable, get in the way when eating or speaking, and have a tendency to recur if not treated.

What does removal involve?

Mucocele removal is a minor in-office procedure done under local anaesthetic. The cyst — along with the associated minor salivary gland that caused it — is carefully removed through a small incision on the inner lip. Addressing the underlying gland is the key step, because simply draining the fluid without removing the gland almost always results in the mucocele returning. The tissue removed is routinely sent for pathological review to confirm the diagnosis.

The procedure takes around 30 minutes, healing is generally straightforward, and most patients return to normal activity the same day. Post-procedure soreness is usually mild and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Keeping the area clean and avoiding hard or sharp foods for a few days helps the site heal comfortably.

Have a bump or sore that keeps coming back? If you've had a lump, bump, or sore in your mouth that has been present for several weeks, it's worth having it properly evaluated and treated.

When to call us

You should schedule an evaluation if you notice any of the following and it hasn't resolved within two to three weeks: a sore, ulcer, or wound in the mouth; a lump, bump, or swelling in the soft tissue; a white, red, or discolored patch; or a persistent feeling of roughness or thickness in any area of the mouth. Any lesion that bleeds without a clear cause also warrants prompt attention.
